Propitiation is the King satisfying His righteous anger by extending holy love to His children.
In this third message of the “Behold the Lamb” series, we turn to another essential aspect of Christ’s work on the cross: propitiation. God is perfectly holy and just; He cannot simply overlook sin. Yet in His holy love He desires to redeem a people for Himself.
At the cross, justice and mercy meet. Jesus, the perfect Lamb, stands in our place and absorbs the righteous wrath of God that our sins deserve. In doing so, He satisfies divine justice and opens the way for God to extend mercy and affection to former enemies now brought near as His children.
Understanding propitiation deepens our worship and strengthens our confidence in the finished work of Christ.
