God curbs violence by having the punishment fit the crime.
Continuing in the Book of the Covenant, the Lord applies the sixth commandment (“You shall not murder”) with concrete statutes. Premeditated murder requires capital punishment because every human being is made in the image of God; to take a life is an assault on the Creator Himself. Accidental death and crimes of passion are distinguished, and proportional justice (lex talionis—“eye for eye”) limits vengeance while ensuring the penalty matches the offense.
These laws restrain evil in society and teach God’s people to make right what they have done wrong. They also protect the vulnerable, including the unborn. In an age of emotionalism and drifting justice, Scripture remains the clear standard: life is sacred, justice must be measured, and restitution matters. Believers uphold both the restraining power of the law and the call to holiness that flows from the gospel.
