God wants His children to remember He has provided through a regular Sabbath rest.
In this passage God formally introduces the Sabbath through the ongoing provision of manna. On the sixth day the people gather a double portion; on the seventh day no manna appears. The Lord is teaching Israel a new rhythm—six days of work followed by a holy day of rest and remembrance.
Some still go out looking for manna on the Sabbath and find none. God confronts their disregard and reaffirms that the Sabbath is His gift. The same God who sustains His people daily also commands them to cease from labor so they will not forget the One who provides.
